Finally, finally… finally! Roller derby season is upon us, and not a moment too soon. I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but these winter months were stacking up to be a long and boring endeavor as the break between seasons dragged on and on.
This Saturday night, the wait ends.
And it’s a bit earlier than usual, which works to our advantage. Other than a recent experiment with a winter season that worked out well, most leagues in Kansas City don’t typically begin until sometime in February or March. Apparently they couldn’t wait, and that works just fine for us.
This Saturday night at B&D Skate Center in Independence, Fountain City Roller Derby kicks off the 2016 season as the 2015 defending champions, the Royal Pains, take on the Deadly Sirens to begin the festivities. The Pains have seen significant success these last few seasons, capturing the FCRD championship both in 2013 and 2015, while the Sirens haven’t seen the championship game since 2011 and have faced a few struggles in the seasons since. We’re expecting both of these teams to have a fantastic 2016 and can’t wait to see how this one shakes out as the new season begins.
In the second game of the evening, the Shotgun Sheilas, who won all the marbles in 2012 and 2014, square off against a Lovely Lethals team who, like the Sirens, haven’t had the best of luck the last few years, but are looking to turn things around and make 2016 their relative bitch. You can cheer on all four of these amazing teams with us this Saturday night.

Tickets at the door are $12 for adults, and according to the event page, kids ages 12 and under are now free, which is quite a change from previous seasons. Doors open at 6:00, and the first game begins promptly at 6:30.
Yes, fans, derby season is finally upon us! Come cheer on Fountain City Roller Derby as they kick of Season 7 at B&D Skate Center!
