Are You Ready for Some Derby?

There was a time in Kansas City when the roller derby season didn’t start for another two or three months. The Kansas City Roller Warriors‘ season typically ran from March to August, and Fountain City usually started in February and lasted through roughly the end of summer.

Times have thankfully changed, and nowadays, the months-long wait for more roller derby action has been pared down significantly — especially when you consider KCRW’s mini-tournaments and invitationals that can extend into December, rendering the “off season” a bit of a misnomer.

Derby fans in Kansas City will be able to get their flat track fix starting January 5 when KCRW kicks off its 2019 season at Memorial Hall in KCK.

We’ll have the full details for you as bout day draws nearer. Mark your calendars now for January 5 and join us trackside as we spend another incredible season covering this amazing league.

Later, toward the end of January, Fountain City Roller Derby‘s all-gender/coed league kicks off ’19 with Game 1 on January 26.

The Shotgun Sheilas are Fountain City Roller Derby Champions

If you were fortunate enough to join us this past Saturday night, you witnessed history as the Shotgun Sheilas brought home their third Fountain City Roller Derby championship trophy.

Although the final score wasn’t very close — the Sheilas took down the resurgent Deadly Sirens 78-51 in the end — it was a very exciting night overall, and most memorable for those Sirens fans in attendance, particularly those who have been with us long enough to feel the pain of the Teal’s seven-year championship dry spell.

The Sirens remain the only team in the league to have never taken home the trophy, but truly, stay tuned for 2019, because we suspect these ladies and their coaches have big things in store for next season. Despite the many things that set roller derby apart from other competitive sports, one similarity that will never go away is the cyclical nature of the whole thing. No one stays down — or on top — forever. It’s as true on the track as it is on the diamond or the gridiron.

The second game of the evening featured the coed championship bout between perennial favorites The Untouchables and the Usual Suspects. Like the preceding game, it wasn’t especially close in the score, but it was, as always, full of high-energy, hard-hitting action Fountain City is known for. In the end, the Usual Suspects pulled out the championship win to the delight of all their fans on hand at B&D who came out to cheer them on.

The 2018 Fountain City Championships

The last time the Deadly Sirens competed for the Fountain City Roller Derby championship, the league wasn’t even called Fountain City. It was called Dead Girl Derby. But this Saturday night at B&D Skate Center in Independence, they will indeed take the track once again in the hopes of bringing home their first ever championship trophy.

They’ll be facing off against the heavily favored Shotgun Sheilas, who have experienced tremendous success over the past several seasons, but even at that, still haven’t taken home the Fountain City trophy since 2014.

So someone’s going home with all the marbles for the first time in a while, and we hope you’ll join us trackside for the final event of Fountain City’s phenomenal 2018 season.

The second bout of the night features the Coed League championship as The Usual Suspects face off against perennial favorites The Untouchables. Coed action has been a fan favorite in Kansas City for a few years now, and it’s always fantastic to see the ladies and gents in head-to-head competition.

And if the evening’s festivities weren’t already enough, the Kansas City Junior Roller Warriors will be playing an exhibition bout between the two games! Make plans now to join Fountain City for this phenomenal send-off to the 2018 season.

Doors at B&D open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night, and the first whistle is at 6:00. Adult tickets are $12, and everyone under the age of 18 is admitted free. Advance tickets are still available at Brown Paper Tickets.

Immediately following will certainly be one of the best novelty bouts Kansas City roller derby has seen in quite some time as the Usual Suspects take on a team called the FCRD Legends. Word has it that this “Legends” team is made up of old school Fountain City and legendary Dead Girl Derby players who haven’t been seen on the track in quite some time!
