Featured Roller Warrior – April 2013

Our featured Roller Warrior for the month of April is Damsel of D’Tension!

Name: Damsel of D'Tension
Team: Black Eye Susans
Number: 44
Position(s): Blocker
Seasons with KCRW: 6

How she discovered KCRW:
“I was fortunate enough to be invited to a bout with a friend who was working for Big Brothers Big Sisters. One of the skaters was a “Big,” and had told him what a great time roller derby was. On Halloween we costumed up and made the trek out to Winnwood Skate Center to check it out for ourselves. Needless to say, we had a blast! I was intrigued immediately and thought it looked like such a fun group to be a part of… until I ran into Dirty Britches and my intrigue immediately turned to intimidation. However, I didn’t let that stop me! I remained a fan for about a year until I decided to bite the bullet and try out. The rest, as they say, is history.”

Origin of her derby name:
“I am a teacher, so I wanted something that tied into my profession. After much brainstorming and database checking, I finally found a name that wasn’t taken. I guess that a teacher by day/derby girl by night wasn’t as obscure as I thought it was.”

Past injuries:
“Aside from pulled muscles, random aches, and some bruising, I have been very fortunate to not have had any major injuries. I only hope my luck stays that way!”

Favorite skater:
“I just cannot answer that! I have learned so much from so many people. KCRW has countless numbers of great coaches, teachers, and leaders. I think that I have taken something away from every person in this league that I have skated with or against.”

Proudest derby moment:
“My proudest derby moment was in 2011, when the Black Eye Susans took 3rd place in the Rink of Fire. We were the perpetual 4th place team and just couldn’t seem to shake it. We always fought hard and left it all on the track…. but it never paid off. That year, I guess something clicked. I honestly don’t really remember the game, but remember the feeling of accomplishment afterwards. Since then, we have moved in the rankings every year. I am hoping we stay on trend with that for 2013!”

What sets her apart in KCRW:
“I always have a tube of Carmex in my bra. I can’t skate without it. Everyone knows that if they need some Boobmex, I’m their girl!”

Featured Dead Girl – March 2013

Our featured Dead Girl for the month of March is Attn Deficit!

Name: Attn Deficit
Team: The Deadly Sirens
Number: 0(shiny)
Position(s): Blocker
Seasons with Dead Girl Derby: 2

How she discovered Dead Girl Derby:
“I came to a game to watch Striking Dervish play and immediately fell in love with the game and the excitement.”

Origin of her derby name:
“I actually have ADD and thought the number 0(shiny) was funny.”

Past injuries:
“I tore my MCL during a scrimmage last season and was off skates for almost two months.”

Favorite skater:
“That’s a tough one. I have so many favorites from different leagues, it’s really hard to pick one. I think I would have to say Turnher & Burnher. She doesn’t have an ounce of quit in her and she shows how much she loves the sport every time she skates. Not to mention she’s an amazing skater.”

Proudest derby moment:
“Scoring my first points ever last game!!”

What sets her apart in Dead Girl Derby:
“If I had to guess, I would have to say it’s the fact that I had no experience playing any sports and I couldn’t skate at all. I use my experience with derby as an example to my kids to try new things. It’s an amazing feeling to surprise yourself by doing the very thing you thought you couldn’t do.”

Featured Roller Warrior – March 2013

Our featured Roller Warrior for the month of March is Auttoman Empire!

Name: Auttoman Empire
Team: The Dreadnought Dorothys
Number: 915
Position(s): Blocker
Season with KCRW: Rookie

How she discovered KCRW:
“I watched derby on Metro Sports and was more than a little intrigued. The very next day I met Jade Lightning. Serendipity.”

Origin of her derby name:
“Besides my mom calling me Sunshine, my nickname has been Auto for as long as I can remember. Incorporating it was harder than I thought with names like Autumn Bomb, Autobon, and Automaton just not fitting me. [Auttoman] Empire feels right.”

Past injuries:
“I’ve been hurt (a sprained ankle during the draft), but not injured.”

Proudest derby moment:
“My proudest derby moment so far has to be during a practice with The Cowtown Butchers at River Roll Skate Center. Polish Hitman told me I’m the next ‘so-and-so’ and Crimson Cobra said I hit like ‘what’s her name.’ To be spoken of by skaters of their incredible skill level in the same breath as skaters that I admire was the best feeling ever!”

What sets her apart in KCRW:
“I wouldn’t say there is any one thing that sets me apart in KCRW. We are women, we are powerful, and we are awesome in our own individual ways. When I get together on the track as a team with my teammates is when I feel truly amazing!”

Featured Dead Girl – February 2013

Our featured Dead Girl for the month of February is Hittie Kittie!

Name: Hittie Kittie
Team: The Shotgun Sheilas
Number: Me-OW
Position(s): Jammer
Seasons with Dead Girl Derby: 2

How she discovered Dead Girl Derby:
“My derby wife, Anya Neezenbeg, works at my apartment office, and I met my former neighbor, Ref Tacular, at the dog park. They showed me the world of derby, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with the sport.”

Origin of her derby name:
“I kinda have a thing for Hello Kitty, so Hittie Kittie was a clever way to tie that into my derby persona. I was going to call myself ‘Serinasaurus,’ but that’s a mouthful!”

Past injuries:
“In the 2012 championship game, I tore my left iliopsoas (it’s one of the major hip flexors and allows you to lift your leg up). Huge thank you to Dr. Jake at Chiropractic Life Center for getting me through physical therapy and putting me back on the track!”

Favorite skater:
“It depends on the reason why they are my favorite. I admire Turnher & Burnher because she is an all-around a great athlete, has the most character, and displays the best sportsmanship of any girl on the league. Pippi Strongblocking, my captain, is one of my favorites because she inspires every skater because she can do ANYTHING derby and teach anything derby. And finally, Dir-T Diana because she was the skater I wanted to grow up and be after I saw my very first derby game.”

Proudest derby moment:
“The clear choice here is winning the 2012 championship after an undefeated season, but that is a proud TEAM moment — we earned that together.”

What sets her apart in Dead Girl Derby:
“I am one of the sweetest no-pants-wearing girls out there!”

Featured Roller Warrior – September 2012

Our featured Roller Warrior for the month of September is Plan B standout Cold Gin!

Name: Cold Gin
Team: The Victory Vixens, Plan B
Number: 13
Position(s): Blocker, Jammer

How she discovered KCRW:
I discovered derby through my daughter Dirty Heri of the Dreadnought Dorothys. She had seen a bout at the age of 15, fell in love with the sport, and decided to try out once she turned 18. She couldn’t convince a friend to try out with her so we tried out together. We were both drafted in the first round, so we went to opposing home teams.

Origin of her derby name:
My derby name comes from the KISS song.

Favorite derby moment:
I have to say one of my favorite derby moments would have to be when I was blocking against my daughter in our home opener this year. I had taken her out and the announcer said to the crowd that Dirty Heri had just been taken out by her MOM! I think the crowd enjoyed it as much as I did.

Favorite skater:
I must say that it is hard to pick just one favorite skater. I love Red Ripper. She is our last remaining original skater and deserves props for playing eight seasons. This sport can be hard on the body. She is always the first to help and share her knowledge with anyone willing to listen. My other favorite skater is Evolution. She is a beast! Lou will show you how much she loves you by how hard she hits you. Tough love is her motto, and not to mention she makes the world’s best sangrias.

Derby philosophy:
Work hard and play harder.

Featured Dead Girl – August 2012

Our featured Dead Girl for the month of August is Kody Kayoss!

Name: Kody Kayoss
Team: The Royal Pains
Number: 11:11
Position(s): Jammer, Blocker

How she discovered Dead Girl Derby:
Imma B. Sneaky invited me to a game last season and I was hooked!

Origin of her derby name:
My name is Kody Kaye and I wanted to cause KAYOSS! But stay tuned, because I am changing my name next season!

Favorite derby moment:
The first time I lined up for a jam! My heart was going to jump out of my chest, or i was going to pee my pants!

Favorite skater:
In [the movies], Smashley Simpson in the movie Whip It. In real life, Dir-T Diana.

Derby philosophy:
My philosophy is to stay out of the penalty box!

All that's fit to digest from the world of Kansas City roller derby!
