Featured Skater — June 2022

Our Featured Skater for the month of June is CleoSmashYa of the Shotgun Sheilas!

Name: CleoSmashYa
Team(s): Shotgun Sheilas, Public Enemies
Number: 1030
Position(s): Jammer, pivot
Seasons with FCRD: 2

Q: How did you come to be involved with Fountain City Roller Derby?

“In my early twenties, I used to inline skate on ramps and transition at skate parks. So when one of my ex-coworkers introduced me to roller derby, I knew this was something I had to be a part of. I get to skate and hit people?! Heck yeah!”

Q: Explain the origin of your derby name.

“I’ve always been obsessed with Egypt since I was a tiny girl. I’d read every book I could get my hands on, tried to study hieroglyphics, and wanted to be an archeologist. So fast forward to my early thirties when I did the study on my family’s lineage, and with the help of an ancestry test, I found out I was 12% Moroccan/Egyptian. I was beyond stoked; hence, CleoSmashya was born, based on a powerful Egyptian Queen.”

She’s actually on her way back UP in this shot, not on her way down.

Q: Roller derby changes every life it touches. How has it changed yours?

“I don’t know where to start… I could go on forever.

Derby has saved me. At a time when I had very little family and no community to fall back on, derby fell into my lap. The universe knew I needed a community to lean on and give back to. I have built friendships that are closer than family. I know that derby has helped me blossom into a strong and powerful woman. I have found my voice, worth, and belonging. The derby community has helped me find out a lot about myself, for which I’m forever grateful.”

Q: What makes CleoSmashYa tick? What keeps you going in this crazy love we call roller derby?

“I think knowing I’m a part of something bigger than myself keeps me going. Knowing my teammates are out there giving their all, and making holes and protecting me, makes me want to go even harder. I don’t want to let them down! I am only as good as we are as a whole.

If I could play and sell roller derby for a living, I’d be fantastic.”

Fountain City All-Gender Game 1 – Results

Fountain City Roller Derby kicked off its 2019 season in a little bit different fashion Saturday night, this time starting the year off with their rebranded all-gender league taking the lead, instead of mixing up their schedule with the women’s division, which won’t begin until June.

Perhaps most importantly, Saturday night’s event marked the beginning of Fountain City’s 10th season on the flat track! Can you believe it?

Happy 10th birthday, Fountain City!

Much more on this incredible milestone in the months to come. We’ve been around for most of the league’s existence, and the memories are pretty incredible.

And if that wasn’t enough, Saturday night also marked the flat track debut of the newest all-gender team, The Regulators, which was comprised, of course, of a hodgepodge of new and old faces you have (and haven’t) seen on the track at B&D before.

The first game of the night featured a rematch of last season’s championship bout. The 2018 coed champions, the Usual Suspects, notched a 67-58 win over the formidable Untouchables, leaving us to wonder just where the trophy will land this season, given how competitive the whole endeavor was.

That game was followed by the 2019 debut of the Public Enemies, who brought home a big win over the brand new Regulators by a final score of 109-42.

Current Standings

Usual Suspects: 1-0
Public Enemies: 1-0
Untouchables: 0-1
The Regulators: 0-1

We’ll have bout photos published as soon as we’re able. Stay tuned, of course, for more Fountain City action — the 2019 season has just begun!

Scar Wars

This Saturday night, which side will you choose — the dark side or the light?

Fountain City Roller Derby‘s Coed League is back in action this weekend at B&D Skate Center, and you won’t want to miss this.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening, and the night begins with the Public Enemies taking on the Untouchables.

Immediately following will certainly be one of the best novelty bouts Kansas City roller derby has seen in quite some time as the Usual Suspects take on a team called the FCRD Legends. Word has it that this “Legends” team is made up of old school Fountain City and legendary Dead Girl Derby players who haven’t been seen on the track in quite some time!

Of all things, do not miss this rare opportunity to see some of your favorite Fountain City and Dead Girl players, past and present, taking the track and squaring off in this very unique event. Adult tickets are $12 at the door, and everyone under the age of 18 is admitted free. The first game begins at 6:30 sharp.

Join us trackside this Saturday night for Fountain City Roller Derby‘s Scar Wars!
