Fountain City Game 2 Round-Up and Photos

Saturday night at B&D Skate Center in Independence, Fountain City Roller Derby held one of the most memorably-themed events in a long time: a night of roller derby with a Tim Burton theme. Teams got gussied up in outfits reminiscent of some of Burton’s most memorable films, such as Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and 1989’s Batman.

The photos really speak for themselves. Peruse those, and below, we’ll have the bout recaps.

The evening began with the Royal Pains taking on the Lovely Lethals in a classic match-up that saw the Purple Passion hang on to the lead for most (if not all) of the game, although by how much varied throughout. The Ladies in Pink kept it close throughout much of the first half, but the Pains opened up a 50-28 lead by the end of the second period. The second half looked like more of the same, although the Lethals did manage to narrow the lead a touch before dropping the bout by a final score of 68-50.

The second game of the night… went a bit differently. The Deadly Sirens do love to keep things interesting, and that is just the way we like it. The Shotgun Sheilas jumped out to a 26-9 lead over the Teal by the end of the first period, but that margin would be tough to maintain as the Sirens gradually chipped away at the lead in the second half, eventually bringing the score to within two points with only 34 seconds left in the game. The last two jams were pure insanity as the Sheilas clung to a razor-thin lead they would widen by exactly one point by the end of the game as they held on to win by a score of 56-53. The Deadly Sirens fell to a 1-1 record on the year so far, but not before making the Sheilas work for it every inch of the way.

I’m not kidding, this is not the same Deadly Sirens team that landed in last place the last few seasons. This is the kind of team you ignore at your own peril. They’ve more than proven that so far this season.

Current Standings:

Royal Pains: 2-0
Deadly Sirens: 1-1
Shotgun Sheilas: 1-1
Lovely Lethals: 0-2

The Royal Pains remain the only undefeated team in the league thus far, but that mettle will certainly be tested later this month when they take on the burgeoning Deadly Sirens on the 25th.

Fountain City Roller Derby has a morning bout against the Chicago Red Hots on March 11, and then Game 3 of their 2017 house season on the 25th. We’ll keep you posted. Stay tuned to KC Derby Digest for all the latest!
